Nacional Records Seeking Interns

Nacional Records is looking for summer interns to work at our North Hollywood offices.  Home to Grammy-winning and iconic artists like Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Aterciopelados and Nortec Collective, the company is a division of Cookman International, which also also organizes the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC), an annual event in NYC that brings together the biggest names in rock, hip-hop and electronic music from across the Americas.

Nacional is looking for motivated and ambitious interns interested in working hard and learning about the entertainment industry.  This is a great opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in music publicity, artist management, event production, tour marketing and radio promotion.  Although a lot of our artists are from Latin America, most of their fanbases are English-speaking, and the media we deal with include Rolling Stone, LA Times, KCRW, and MTV.

Interns are expected to be available in our North Hollywood office at least 10 hrs/week and can receive academic credit.  Spanish-language skills are a plus, though not required.
Some of the exciting intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with publicity and production for the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC).
  • Contributing suggestions and ideas for projects or improvements.
  • Represent Nacional at events and distribute materials such as iTunes cards, posters and flyers.
  • Develop Street Teams by recruiting members, creating and maintaining relationships and communication with members.

If interested, please submit your resume and cover letter explaining why you think would be a good fit to be an intern at Nacional Records to canyon.cody@cookman.com

“In the album, which will be released on April 10 through Nacional Records, Lionheart shows her unique style in a track listing that is reminiscent of the yearning in Carla Morrison’s indie-pop songs and the life-experience of a soulfully-mature Gaby Moreno- Al Borde

Monica Lionheart is a singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist known for creating unique, atmospheric songs with a global twist.

Lionheart’s music is often described as both mystifying and haunting and Indian Summer is no exception. Filled with lush arrangements, mesmerizing vocals and vivid imagery, the album is a chronicle of love and heartbreak. In describing her vision for the album Lionheart says, “I named it Indian Summer because it is one of nature’s many art forms. When an Indian Summer happens, there’s a collective sigh in the enjoyment. My aim was to capture that feeling in the songs.”

La Vida Boheme at SXSW

La Vida Boheme had quite a week at this year’s SXSW in Austin. Not only performing at the Nacional Records Showcase, LVB put on an amazing show at the NPR and Billboard showcases, and then headed down the road to perform at the Echale Festival in San Antonio on the same weekend.

On Thursday, La Vida Boheme was featured in the official showcase of NPR, who had selected their debut record ‘Nuestra’ as one of NPR’s top 100 albums of 2011.

After the performance, lead singer Henry DArthenay was interviewed by Bob Boilen of  NPR’s ‘All Songs Considered’ (pictured below).  Esquire named LVB one of the 12 Best New Bands at SXSW 2012:

When I saw this band at NPR’s day party at the Parish, I flashed to seeing The Clash in 1979. It was the fierceness, the original sound, the hodgepodge of styles — it was the clash of cultures and sound. La Vida Boheme are from Caracas, Venezuela. Their music doesn’t mimic The Clash, but it does have that fresh vision. Live, the four men dressed in white, splattered from head-to-toe in blue and green paint, which made for a stunning visual, sure, but their segue from song-to-song and style-to-style was the real surprise. It was also cohesive and commanding.

Watch to the full video of La Vida Boheme’s concert at NPR.

NPR’s  Steven Thompson reviewed the show, check out his words below:

“Backs to the stage, shirts drenched and spattered with blue paint, La Vida Boheme opened NPR Music’s SXSW day party in kinetically jumpy style Thursday, setting the tone for an afternoon of genre-jumping surprises. By the time the Venezuelan dance-rock band hit the “gabba gabba hey” bit in the chorus of the set-opening “Radio Capital,” it was clear that nuance would curl up and take a backseat to chant-along charm and stage-shaking energy.

A boundlessly gleeful young band, La Vida Boheme invigorates Latin rock with the grit and viscera of punk and the churning drive of dance music. The result synthesizes entire cultures and genres to form a hard-driving, paint-splattered party. What could be better?”

La Vida Boheme also performed at the Billboard showcase (pictured above), which was reviewed at Univision, Austin 360, and Billboard.   They also played a very rare acoustic (and unpainted) performance for La Banda Elastica, seen below.

After SXSW it was off to San Antonio for the Echale Music Festival, which the San Antonio Current reviewed:

“I don’t recall a locally unknown rock en español band being greeted with such enthusiasm before. The following video was taken during Venezuela’s La Vida Bohème’s second song. I hope these guys come back soon.”

Next stop was VIVE LATINO in Mexico City on Sunday March 25.

Nacional Records & Friends Showcase at SXSW Friday, March 16

Nacional Records is proud to announce its first-ever official showcase at this year’s SXSW. The label’s showcase will take place March 16 at Maggie’s Mae on Sixth and will feature three of Nacional’s buzzworthy artists – 2012 Grammy nominated La Vida Boheme, newly signed San Francisco indie darlings Loquat and the critically acclaimed collab that is Ritmo Machine – Beastie Boys/Cypress Hill percussionist Eric Bobo and renowned turntablist Latin Bitman.

On top of these three exciting artists, the showcase will also present three special guests – 3BallMTY, Monsieur Perine and Astro. Being #1 on Billbloard, 3BallMTY are a tribal guarachero – indigenous Mexican and African sounds mixed with cumbia basslines – and are sure to make quite an impression on the crowd. Hailing from Colombia, indie rock band Monsieur Perine emanate some eclectic sounds on top of their unique fashions. And making their SXSW debut performance all the way from Chile, Astro will showcase a blend of synthesizer and alternative rock.
Eric Bobo + Latin Bitman are Ritmo Machine.

If LVB showed up to the Grammy red carpet in Pollock-attire, there’s bound to be some paint splatter action in Austin.

The show will be open to anyone with a festival badge or wristband.
