The Nortec Collective, a group of musicians in Tijuana, blend the traditional Norteno style with club beats. They have thrived in the mix-it-up culture of Tijuana for a decade, in part, because so many people traveled across the border to collaborate with and listen to them. Have you heard about “La Colifata”? It is a benefit project produced by Manu Chao and the patients at a psychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires. “La Colifata” is a radio station broadcast within the hospital that uses media as therapeutic treatment. It is a resource between the clinical and external worlds that allows Los Colifatos (the hospital’s residents) to recreate the social link with people living outside the hospital. “Fiyah” is really quite the understatement when two of my favorite Latin bands get together on one track. Nova from Pacha Massive remixes Bomba Estereo’s huge summer hit “Fuego” into an intricately layered yet still blithe track.The original song’s integrity isn’t lost on Nova, who amps the bass up, but, even so, Li’s vocals don’t get overpowered. The walls are sweating.
