Filters Top 10 of 2007, Day Twenty Three: Mexican Institute of Sound

by Staff | 12.23.2007

Based out of Mexico City, DJ and producer Camilo Lara is the mastermind of M.I.S. by night, and by day is the president of EMI Mexico. Talk about split personalities, this list of top tens of 07 is clear indication of Laras unique impressions and influences from the life in the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City. Along with groups like Nortec Collective and Kinky, M.I.S. is part of a growing Mexican electronica movement, encouraging fusions of folk and more traditional music with modern sounds.

Camilo Lara Of Mexican Institute Of Sound:

No me gusta la Coke! - American Apparel Flea Market event

Quiero Club/Niña/Viva Radio dj’s at American Apparel – Flea Market

When I was younger,  I never understood what a flea market was.  I thought it was sort of a pet store with a flea section. But then I saw people getting clothes out of a big piles and not fleas last week during American Apparels’ flea market event…weird ah?

Now in Los Angeles, we still don’t have flea sections or killer termites - but we do have a crazy mass of people fighting for extremely cheap clothes!  With loud Mexican pop music!  Two bands called “Regias” (from Monterrey, MX) played and taquito trucks lined the way to battle the hunger after the whole crazy ordeal.

The scoop:  I got to American Apparels’ factory around 4 pm and besides waiting in line for a while, Niña was playing in between the two main AA buildings so everyone who was standing on the Disneyland attraction-size line had the chance to listen to Niña tunes, catch the smell of those Taquitos (mmm yummie) and get a little anxious by watching people walking out of the building with big bags filled with colorful cheap clothes. I guess I have to get there earlier next time.

After finding some cheap stuff, Quiero Club got on stage.  The crazy fiesta songs worked perfectly for this event.  Fans were trying to decide whether looking for the matching pair of socks was worth it or continue listening to the group sing happily: “No me gusta la coke…” || “I don’t like drinking coke” - hard decision, indeed.

Well - I’m off, I need some diet coke and taquitos. Plus, trying to survive the Cali-breeze wearing my brand new hoodie. ;)

Christmas Time!

Awww. Christmas Time has arrived! The day after Halloween, my boss bought a small golden tree to put on top of my counter; the reception area of Nacional Records’ office. It truly is my first Christmas and was starting to feel like it! December 3rd was our time to celebrate. We made the office feel more like XMAS, putting together the tree and waiting patiently for the Puerto Rican food to arrive. We even had special guests: our own Plastilina Moshs’, Jonaz and Rosso, who kicked back before dinner playing Guitar Hero in our artist lounge. Fun times, especially with the wine!

Dinner went smoothly - all smiles and music [xmas music, anyone?] The food was delicious and we took some crazy pictures. And that was only Monday! On Tuesday, the Chivas Studio Party with PMOSH hit us! Mr Pmosh was in town ready to rock the house and for those who are new in the Nacional Records family, like ME - this was a special occasion. We don’t need to mention the line outside of the place and the drinks inside and all that. All the industry folks mingled to free Chivas. Finally, PMOSH took the stage and.how to put it without sounding redundant? THEY ROCKED IT!

Rosso, Jonaz and Edy sang, rocked out, jumped around, and what else? I definitely got into it with their performance and energy. I will give you a small backstage insiders look again, since I was able to hang out with the guys before the show. I can say that again, our artist are not only musically talented, but also amazing people. Jonaz and Edy are just crazy and hilarious - the whole group just seem to be in on the same inside joke. It’s really fun to be around. Tijuana was their next destination and shhhh - Jonaz told me Buenos Aires would be on the map for their next tour soon after they finish the new studio album in 2008. Can’t wait for my city to experience PMOSH!

If I were you I’d add Nacional Records on myspace friends along with our artists. I wouldn’t miss our releases and these parties for anything. With all the updating we’re doing, that’s the place to get all the latest info. Next up: Kinky at the Chivas Studio, Xmas musings, and reflections on the new year, 2008!
